“The desire and the actions are yours to take;
the focus and belief in you are the coach's to give.”
– Barbara Shapiro Honestly, until we have a conversation, I can’t know why you, specifically, should hire me to coach you or any of your direct reports. Coaching is an important relationship. There should be a connection between the client and the coach that “feels” right.
In general, people hire a coach at various points in their professional or personal lives: when starting a new business, making a career change, transitioning from a technical role to manager or from manager to executive, leading an organizational culture change, reevaluating life choices, feeling ready for a personal or professional breakthrough, or simply needing a sounding board.
Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life. Beginning with the client’s intention, coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. While the coach provides feedback and an objective perspective, the client is responsible for taking the steps to produce the results he or she desires.
If you value excellent results, you want to develop as a manager so that you are ready for the challenges you face today...and tomorrow. Earlier in your career, you probably succeeded in learning by trial and error. My research on transitions shows that executives still rely on this method. In a Chief or Senior Executive role, can you risk encountering a critical situation where a mistake can be costly to your organization - and your career?
Are you embarking on or already negotiating your way in an executive transition? Would it be helpful to have a partner early on to:
· understand the management or corporate culture?
· understand and flex your leadership style with that of your boss / Board?
· align your expectations with those of the key stakeholders in your success?
· develop (and execute) a personal transition plan to address your knowledge / skills gap for your new role?
· plan to leave an organizational legacy by leading your group to a new stage of development?
Why look back and wonder if you might have accelerated your progress or avoided a career blunder. Why wait to benefit from coaching?
